The Bar Snafu
With the money from housesitting, we decided to buy this bar that we've been waiting to buy until we had extra money. We wanted a place to store some of our extra dishes, wine glasses, and of course, the alcohol.
We got our bar from West Elm and took it home. Bonus, we got 10% off because they have a student discount! It was in pieces to put together, but one of the main ones was scratched. Ugh. Jason took it back and got the only other one they had in stock. We started trying to put it together at home and it was an utter disaster. The instructions were confusing and not very good. Jason put in the back piece and it was supposed to slide down. Only there was nothing to catch it, so it slid all the way down and landed on his foot. Ouch! Then the top shelf crashed down and completely broke the bottom shelf and ruined the side pieces.
Needless to say... we were pissed. We have put together a TON of IKEA furniture. And believe me, IKEA furniture is a test of any relationship, and we put together probably half of the furniture in our house. If anyone can put together this stuff, it's Jason. He's great with details and pretty handy with one of those little wrench things that comes in the box. So after we cooled down (and yelled about it a little - not at each other of course, just generally about the situation) we decided we would just get our money back. We would find something else.
We spent the evening watching Castle (new love - Nathan Fillion! If you haven't watched Firefly yet, go do it!) and looking for something else we could put in the space where we had intended to put the bar. We couldn't find anything we liked that wasn't ridiculously expensive. Disappointing. We decided that if they would build the dang bar for us, and put together all unbroken pieces to make one complete bar, we would do it. If they gave us a discount.
I didn't think this would work, but when Jason called and told them how unhappy we were, they bent over backwards to make us happy. I took the broken pieces back, and they built us a new one, replacing everything that had been broken. And they gave us an additional 20% off, which is just amazing! We ended up getting 30% off, and we didn't even have to build it. Amazing!!
I am so happy to have it, as it's exactly what we wanted. It looks like it belongs exactly where we put it. That spot needed something, and this bar is perfect! And I know in the future it will be able to transition into a dining room to be used as a buffet or even in an entry way. We are very happy with our purchase (especially the deal we ended up getting) and I love having everything hidden away!
