A Tank Top & Two Yards of Fabric

I've been falling a bit behind on my goal of making something new once a month this year. Jason is in Texas this week to attend Summit at ACU, so as soon as he left, I got busy sewing!

I pinned this tutorial a reeeeally long time ago (26 weeks ago to be exact, thank you Pinterest for knowing that) and I finally decided to try it. I picked out the fabric for the skirt a long time ago too... June, I think? Whenever I took that quilting class, I picked it up. And I've had this tank top for YEARS (probably since high school) and it's always been too short. Perfect project for it!

This tutorial would have been really easy if I had a sewing machine that worked well with elastic thread. Alas, I have a Brother, which has a drop-in bobbin, which makes it a nightmare to work with elastic thread. Awesome. I decided to attempt it anyway, and gave up on my Brother after about 30 minutes of frustration.

Luckily! I still have the Kenmore that my cousin gave me. It has some bobbin issues too, but I figured it might work for a little while. Unfortunately, though it played better with the elastic thread, it didn't quite do what it was supposed to. The tutorial shows the waist of the skirt bunching up pretty small, about the right size to pin to the bottom of the tank top. No such luck for me. The elastic barely bunched at all. So I just pinned it all kinda bunched up, and hoped for the best.

It worked out okay! It isn't fitted at all with just the dress, but it looks great with a belt or with the sash I made to go with it. And the sash covers up all the mistakes I made where the tank joins the skirt, haha. Perfect! For the first thing I've made for me to actually wear, I'm pretty happy with it! It's super comfortable, too. I'm excited to wear it with a cardigan to work or out with friends. And it will still work for fall!

Please pardon this crappy picture, but I was too excited not to go ahead and snap it. And remember, Jason is in Texas without me, so I had to use self timer. And no I didn't pick up the stuff on the floor before I took this. Just keeping it real for you!

I didn't realize you had made that when I saw you wearing it the other day. It is beautiful! Great job!! :)
Cute!! Love the fabric. I have a Brother as well, and it's not my fave.
